About the International Photography Competition
The Environmental Photographer of the Year competition (EPOTY) is a prestigious international online photography competition helped in 2023 organized by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM). It aims to showcase the most inspirational environmental photography from photographers of all ages around the globe.
CIWEM, committed to providing factual information grounded in evidence and science, utilizes EPOTY Competiton to inform and educate both the public and experts. By harnessing the power of storytelling, the competition makes global events more accessible, highlighting environmental issues through challenging and inspiring photos, photojournalistic narratives, and celebrations of innovation and hope.
Now in its 16th year, The Environmental Photographer of the Year Competition celebrates humanity's ability to survive and innovate. It showcases thought-provoking images that draw attention to our impact on the environment and inspire sustainable living.
Categories and Awards in this Photography Competition

Environmental Photographer of the Year
This top award recognizes a single photo that enhances people's understanding of the causes and effects of environmental change and social inequality, highlights solutions to the climate and ecological emergency, and inspires sustainable living. It is open to professional and amateur photographers of all ages worldwide. The winner will receive a £5,000 (INR 517,872 approx) cash prize and gain exposure through interviews in CIWEM's Environment Magazine, a profile on WaterBear's website, and a feature on Nikon Europe's website.

This category calls for photos that demonstrate nature's ability to recover and showcases innovative nature-based solutions and conservation initiatives that are revitalizing ecosystems. It encourages photography that represents positive nature-based solutions, conservation efforts, and recovery schemes.

Keeping 1.5 Alive Photography Category
Keeping the focus on the climate emergency and carbon activism, this category seeks photos that depict the four headline statements outlined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) regarding global warming of 1.5°C, projected climate change and associated risks, emission pathways consistent with 1.5°C global warming, and strengthening the global response in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication.

Adapting for Tomorrow Photography Category
This category aims to raise awareness of the resilience and adaptability of our environments, communities, and the flora and fauna that inhabit them.
Submission Details for this Online Photography Competition
The competition is open to participants of all ages, including school students & university students. Entry is free of charge, and submissions can be made online through the designated link. The deadline for submissions is August 30, 2023.
