Young Writers Contest
The Philadelphia Science Fiction Society invites students in grades 5-12 to enter the 2023 Young Writers' Contest.
Contest Details:
- Open to all students in grades 5-12
- Separate categories for Middle School (grades 5-8) and High School (grades 9-12)
- Prizes: $100 for first place, $50 for second place
- Winners receive two full memberships to the 2023 Philadelphia Conference of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror (Philcon)
- Science fiction and fantasy stories eligible
- Word limits: Grades 5-8 (1,000 words or less), Grades 9-12 (3,000 words or less)
Submission Guidelines:
- Contestants may submit one story accompanied by a submission form
- Contact information should be provided on the submission form, not in the story
- Contest opens on May 15, 2023
- Submission deadline: October 7, 2023
- Hard copy entries should be mailed to Young Writers' Contest, Philadelphia Science Fiction Society, P.O. Box 8303, Philadelphia, PA 19101
- Electronic entries should be emailed to writingcontest2023@philcon.org
- Accepted formats: .pdf, .doc, .rtf, or .txt
Judging and Prizes:
- Stories will be judged by members of the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society
- Prizes will be awarded at the 2023 Philcon
- Winners are welcome to bring guests to the award ceremony
Publication Rights:
The Philadelphia Science Fiction Society reserves the nonexclusive right to publish winning stories with written consent from parents or guardians.
